The mission of the Purple Line Art-In-Transit Program is to make public art an integral element of the transit project and to further enhance the Purple Line’s high-quality stations, aesthetic treatments and landscape designs. Art will be incorporated into stations as well as other project structures including bridges, fencing, lighting, etc.

Artists for the program were selected by a multiple-stage process that encouraged professional, high-quality art projects. Over 700 artists submitted qualifications and the Purple Line Art-In-Transit Selection Committee – including representatives from the Purple Line Team, Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA), Purple Line Transit Partners (PLTP), art professionals, University of Maryland, Montgomery and Prince George’s countys respective Arts Councils, and community members from the Purple Line Corridor – selected 80 artists to submit concept proposals.
